How to enable the internal DALI power supply of MDA82 controller

MDA82 is an useful tool to debug DALI problems, here are some of my tips how to use it.

1. Make sure the self locking button pull down.

This is the physical switch to turn on or turn off the internal DALI PS.

2. After connect MDA82 to computer via USB type C to type A cable, press the “DIM/Start-stop” multifunction button, and make sure the “DALI bus voltage” indicator turn blue. That means the integrated 16V/10mA (Max.) DALI PS enable output.

When first press the “DIM/Start-stop” momentary push button, the DALI PS will enable output and it will also broadcast a “OFF” command on the bus immediately. That will turn off the light output and you will not monitor the command on the APP software, because it just issues command by the button, no feedback to the USB interface.

3. Notes

1) MDA82 internal DALI PS only has Max. 10mA current output sourced from USB interface. If devices on DALI bus need more power, please add external DALI PS on bus with correct polarity connection and make sure the sum current not above 250mA.

2) The internal DALI PS output enable is the result of “AND” relation with physical switch plus “DIM/Start-stop” momentary push button.

3) If the internal DALI PS output is enabled, the “DIM/Start-stop” multifunction button acts as a dim up, dim down and ON/OFF push button function, can not disable DALI PS output.

4) If you want to disable the internal DALI PS output, please release the physical switch and repeat step 2 again.

Triac/Phase-cut dimmer to DALI broadcast command

In early of 2024, we had a meeting with one client, a friend as well, we talked about market and technology. He suggested us to develop products which is needed but empty on market. This is an good idea, we have technic vantage. After that we spent several months, and then get this proprietary DALI converter---Triac/Phase-cut dimmer to DALI broadcast command (article number.CU-P2D-FM). This converter is to solve the problem that the light flicker when the Triac/Phase-cut LED driver dim fixture to low brightness for energy conservation. The Tria/phase-cut LED driver on current market can supply energy and dimming signal to LED light, but when it dim to low brightness the light blink and not stable.

This new converter unit supports to convert Triac/phase-cut dimmer to DALI broadcast command and perform rightly, with the following features:

1.Compatible with most brand of TRIAC/Phase-cut dimmer(tested with Lutron, GE, Kasa...), support to convert dimming signal down to true <1% brightness without flicker.
2. With addressable DALI interface, it is easy to set broadcasting commands and dimmer-matching parameters.
3. The CU contains a DALI power supply to power DALI loads, sensor or wireless devices, save extra wire to DALI PS.
4. Simply control light behavior, achieving both energy efficiency and occupant comfort goals.
5. Users can use their current dimmer and just add this converter unit.It is the most economic way to optimize the existing Triac/Phase-cut dimmer system.
It has a neat exterior, can just put into fixture. Here below is its working video.

LC DALI Controllers

DALI controller is for the use of inter-changing among diverse dimming signals in luminaria industry.

Been developed diverse useful DALI controls with multi-functions: DALI communication, measuring energy consumption, collecting fixture data, changeover within different dimming signals(include DALI command, 0~10V DIM or digital command DIM, and analog 0~10V dimming output, etc).

The CUs I designed  prefered to integrate DALI bus power supply unit(PSU) inside, it can save cost and time for engineering construction, and simplify connection. They are compatible with DALI-2 sensors(priority) and ESI sensor.

I belief each application in different building/different country, the request will be different, so tailor is neccesory, changing spec meter, simplfying, adding new function, or customize special functions accordingly, etc.

So I write here to share some tech, talk with people who have common topic...
